Sustainability is about meeting present needs without compromising the future by ensuring a balance between human activity and nature’s ability to replenish resources.
At Orbis, we are dedicated to sustainable tourism that protects Malawi’s cultural heritage, biodiversity, and natural landscapes. We strive to minimize our environmental footprint, support local communities and contribute to long-term socio-economic growth while promoting responsible travel practices.
We partner with small, eco-friendly lodges that prioritize sustainable practices, such as solar energy and water conservation. Committed to protecting Malawi’s National Parks and Reserves, we provide our clients with ‘eco-packs’ to encourage sustainable and responsible practices during their tour. Our driver/guides receive ongoing conservation training, and we collaborate with National Park and Reserve staff to enhance our knowledge and provide valuable guidance to clients.
Additionally, through our Payment for Ecosystem Fund which helps offset our carbon emissions, 2.5% of each booking is donated to The Orbis Foundation, which supports local climate change initiatives, including the Treez Project and Sustainable Cape Maclear, helping to restore ecosystems and promote sustainable environmental practices.
Rather than creating our own initiatives, we collaborate with established organizations to foster a more sustainable and impactful model of development. For over 12 years, we have worked closely with communities in Southern Malawi, supporting income-generating projects, infrastructure development, and education programs. Additionally, we partner with various education, conservation, and business training initiatives across the country. Our Foundation team plays a key role in identifying and maintaining these partnerships, ensuring continued support through regular needs assessments and impact evaluations.
At Orbis, we believe sustainable travel plays a vital role in advancing the UN Global Goals. By supporting responsible tourism, we contribute to ending poverty through job creation and community-driven economic opportunities. We help promote food security and sustainable agriculture by working with local suppliers and eco-friendly lodges that prioritize ethical sourcing.
Our initiatives also support health and well-being by partnering with organizations that improve access to essential services. Additionally, we are committed to fostering inclusive, high-quality education by investing in community-led training programs and lifelong learning opportunities. Through sustainable travel, we aim to create a positive and lasting impact on both people and the planet.
